Cramming twenty words on Thursday night can produce a Friday score and an empty head on Monday. Formal spelling instruction works. Last-minute lists mostly do not.
Spelling is not caught by reading alone
Steve Graham and Tanya Santangelo's 2014 meta-analysis asked whether formal spelling instruction makes students better spellers, and whether it helps reading and writing. Across dozens of studies, teaching spelling on purpose improved spelling. Hoping it would appear from wide reading was the weaker bet. Some reading and writing gains showed up too, which makes sense. The same code is being used in both directions.
That does not bless the classic packet of twenty unrelated words. A list with no pattern is just a memory stunt. "Ocean, because, neighbor, rhythm, necessary" is not a lesson. It is a dare.
What to do with this week's words
Group the list by a pattern you can name. Silent e. Vowel teams. A Latin root. Then have the child say the sounds, write the word without looking, and check it. Writing from memory is retrieval. Copying from the list is not.
Bring the same words back on Wednesday and Friday, and a few of last week's words with them. Cepeda's spacing review was not about spelling lists, but the mechanism is the same. A gap between practice sessions is what makes the Friday test mean anything on Monday.
- Limit the new set. Ten words with a pattern beat twenty strangers.
- Have them write the word from memory, not from a model sitting beside the paper.
- Reuse last week's demons in this week's game or quiz.
- If they can only spell it while chanting the letters in order, they do not know the word yet.
Games are fine when the spelling is the work
A word search that contains this week's words can help them notice letter sequences. A memory game that then asks them to type the word is better, because it requires production. Hangman is production with a safety rail. None of those replace the dictated sentence in which they have to spell the word in actual writing.
Drop a word from the active list only after it survives a delay of a few days. A perfect Thursday night is not the standard.
